Nobile Claret Opus

Nobile claret opus, sed opus quod nobile claret,
Clarificet mentes ut eant per lumina vera
Ad verum lumen, ubi Christus janua vera.

Abbot Suger (1081-1151)
Excerpted from the original inscription
on the gilded bronze doors of the west façade
Abbey Church of Saint-Denis, Paris

Translation:

Bright is the noble work; but being nobly bright, the work
Should brighten the minds, so that they may travel through the true lights,
To the True Light where Christ is the true door.

Psalm 127: v. 1

Translation:

Except the
Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. (King James Bible)
